Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School

“We’re able to test around 40 athletes completing two countermovement jumps and one set of 10-5 RSI all within 7 minutes!”

About Kevin Downey

“Not only do we get to test them more frequently, we don’t lose a full day to do so.”

Kevin Downey, who oversees the Strength & Conditioning programmes for over 900 athletes at Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School, faced a familiar challenge: large groups of athletes and limited time. Before implementing Output Sports, Kevin's team relied on two devices that frequently had connectivity and calibration issues, forcing him to choose between losing valuable training time or skipping testing altogether. Seeking a better solution, he turned to Output Sports, which streamlined the testing process, reduced time lost, and enabled consistent progress tracking without compromising training. This article will explore how Kevin integrated the system and its impact on his programme.

Tracking Progress Efficiently

“Saves so much time – we’re able to get more in.”

Like many schools, Bradley-Bourbonnais faces the challenge of large class sizes and limited time. With 40 students per class and only 35 minutes per session (including time for changing in and out), testing often meant losing valuable lesson time.

Previously, testing the entire group for countermovement jump and reactive strength (via a 10/5 repeated hopping test) would take an entire class. However, with Output, Kevin's team can now complete the same testing in just 7 minutes – for all 40 students.

“Not only do we get to test them, but we don’t lose the day either.”

Simplifying Data Management

“Data is important, but data entry sucks.”

Managing data for hundreds of athletes can become overwhelming. While data is essential, entering and organising it can be a time-consuming task. With Output, the process became streamlined. After a brief introduction to the system, students took charge of managing the devices themselves, using the intuitive interface to collect data during sessions.

Each of the school's 18 racks is equipped with an iPad and an Output unit, shared between 2-3 students. This live data collection eliminates the need for post-session data entry, allowing Kevin and his team to focus on analysing and applying the results.

“Having a good user interface where you can get the data quickly is a game changer for us. Any time we can save is valuable.”

Enhancing Session Flow

“When I got my first Output unit, you push a button to turn it on, and you're good to go. The flow of the class has been tremendous.”

Before using Output, testing with only a couple of devices for 40 students caused significant bottlenecks, slowing down the session and disrupting the flow. Now, each rack is equipped with a device shared between 2 to 3 students at a time, allowing more athletes to be tested simultaneously without interruption.

This improved workflow not only saves time but also enables Kevin's team to track more than just key lifts. The versatility of Output means they can now monitor Olympic lifts, jumps, throws, and more.

Expanding Use and Versatility

“Our baseball and softball players are obsessed with seeing how hard they can throw!”

Initially, the team used Output to track just a few key metrics, but the system's versatility quickly expanded its use across various exercises. Now using the output for lifts, jumps, throws and mobility.

Beyond strength and power training, Output is also used for mobility assessments on game day lifts. For example, with their baseball student-athletes they monitor shoulder internal and external rotation. If a student's mobility is lacking, additional arm care exercises will be integrated into their training – enhancing injury prevention. Read more about arm care here.

Driving Athlete Motivation

“We had kids coming up to us asking “can I do another one? I want to beat that one!”

Without saying anything, Kevin and his team began displaying Output’s leaderboard feature on the TVs in the weight room. Instantly they saw athletes wanting to compete, to beat their previous best, asking to do additional reps, wanting to beat their peers in different classes.
