A primary goal of optimizing VBT in training is to drive athletes towards maximal intent across a range of loaded conditions, ensuring they produce the maximum amount of force in the shortest amount of time. Velocity acts as a critical feedback mechanism in this process, guiding athletes to push their limits and achieve peak performance.

Incorporating visual and audible feedback on velocity during training sessions can significantly enhance athlete output. This immediate feedback helps athletes understand their performance in real-time, motivating them to consistently strive for better results. Research shows that athletes who receive velocity feedback during training exhibit greater physical adaptations over a training block compared to those who do not receive such feedback.

Integrating a simple feedback loop centered around a VBT tool that displays velocity can significantly enhance your training process. This loop can involve real-time displays of velocity data, verbal cues from coaches, and even competitive elements among athletes to foster a high-intensity training environment.

By constantly monitoring and communicating velocity, coaches can ensure that athletes maintain high levels of effort and intent, leading to more effective and efficient training sessions.

In summary, using VBT to drive athlete intent is a powerful way to enhance performance. By leveraging velocity feedback, coaches can create a dynamic and responsive training environment that encourages athletes to push their boundaries and achieve their full potential. Output Sports allow you as the coach to drive intent in many different ways.

Visual & audible feedback:

When using the Barbell Velocity module in the Capture app coaches can set velocity targets for their athletes. If a coach uses the ‘Zone’ option, it will provide the athlete with rep-on-rep feedback both visually and auditory based on a minimum and/or maximum velocity that can be set. The velocity feedback can be given in terms of mean or peak.

If the athlete surpasses the target that has been set or the rep falls within the velocity range that has been set, a green bar chart will show on screen and a positive auditory sound will ding, indicating that the target has been reached. If the athlete does not manage to hit the target that has been set or the rep falls outside of the velocity range that has been set, a red bar chart will show on screen and a more negative auditory sound will dong, indicating that the target has not been reached.

If a coach uses the ‘Drop-Off’ option, it will provide the athlete with rep-on-rep feedback both visually and auditory based on a drop off percentage chosen by the coach, which can be calculated by either the first rep or the best rep. The velocity feedback can be given in terms of mean or peak. If the athlete does not fall below the drop-off that has been set, a green bar chart will show on screen and a positive auditory sound will ding, indicating that each rep is within/above the desired drop-off. If the athlete does fall below the drop-off that has been set, a red bar chart will show on screen and a more negative auditory sound will dong, indicating that the rep they have performed is now below the desired drop-off. This will not cut the set short.

Creating competition with leaderboards

For our end-users, establishing a competitive environment has been a key aspect of importance in driving intent within a training or testing session. Output end-users really liked the idea of a live leaderboard functionality within Hub to add additional competitiveness to their training and testing days. Hub Live builds on this idea.

The cloud-based functionality of Hub ensures that results are instantaneously posted once an exercise is completed, giving you the means in which to drive inter-athlete competitiveness within a session. Within Hub Live, a live activity feed and leaderboard are displayed side by side. This can be filtered to display results from the last 24hrs or week, depending on your preference. Within Hub Live there is also the option to filter down results to a specific group or a number of groups if desired. With the live leaderboard and activity feed displaying real-time results, Hub Live will ensure your athletes are maximising their performance in training.

Within Hub Leaderboards you can create up to 3 different leaderboards, which can be created for different exercises, groups and time periods. The leaderboards can subsequently be filtered within a training setting allowing athletes to clearly see who has set the records within their groups on specific exercises, facilitating the means in which to drive competition between your athletes. Relative ranking can also be toggled on for the leaderboards, which allows you as the coach to rank your athletes by a percentage of their best, based on a chosen comparison period.
